PRE-ROMANIC OVIEDO
 Morning excursion (half day).
8  Friday and 12 Tuesday

What better way to start the program of visits than to have a short walk around Oviedo, a modern city with a rich history, walking from the old center of Oviedo to the modern parts of the city? We start with the old University that dates from 1534, the cathedral built in 1388 in a Gothic style and the Camara Santa (Holy chamber), the market and then the Town Hall (the distances on foot are very short). Finally, only 10 minutes away by bus, we make our way to the Naranco Mountain to see our unique historic Asturian pre-Romanesque architecture: San Miguel de Lillo and the Palace of Santa María del Naranco were built by order of King Ramiro I in the IX century and were recently adopted as a Universal Heritage Site by UNESCO.

 PANORAMIC GIJON
 Afternoon excursion (half day).
9 Saturday

Afternoon excursion, leaving Oviedo about 4 p.m.
This old fortified town was described by such ancient historians as Strabo, Pomponius Mela and Pliny as being "the most important pre-Romanesque fortified town on the Asturian coast". Later on, in the second half of the 1st century A.D., during the Roman occupation, it was known as Gigia.
We begin the tour at the Campo Valdés, situated at the foot of the Santa Catalina hill, at the end of San Lorenzo beach. Beneath the Campo Valdés are the Roman baths built between the first and fourth centuries A.D. as public baths for the town. Next to this site is an exhibition of archaeological objects and remains that shed light on the building techniques, the daily life and the flora and fauna of Roman times. Especially interesting are the hypocausts (heating systems) and the mural paintings which decorated the rooms.
After visiting the Roman baths, we continue our walk through the oldest part of Gijon, where we will see Saint Peterīs church, the Roman wall and several emblematic buildings and numerous monuments of interest. The tour concludes with a panoramic view from La Providencia and a stop at San Lorenzo Cap.

CANGAS DE ONIS, COVADONGA & THE LAKES.
Whole day excursion, with lunch included.
11 Monday

Departing by bus at 9 a.m., at about 1 hour from Oviedo, we find CANGAS DE ONIS, a lovely town with a romanic Bridge and an important historic legacy. COVADONGA, only 10 km away, is a place of great significance for the Asturians and Spain history. A magnificent Basilique has been built. The lakes are a caprice of Nature: situated at an altitude of more than 1000 m and with a depth of more than 300 m they originate from the actions of glaicers.
Cangas de Onís, the first capital of the Asturian Kingdom, was founded by King Pelayo in 722 A.D. after the battle of Covadonga, an event which initiated the reconquest of Spain over the occupying Arabs. Then, after having undergone several reconstructions, we visit the Chapel of Santa Cruz, rebuilt by Favila in order to house the cross of Pelayo, the symbol of Asturias. We move on now to visit Covadonga where we will see the Santa Cueva (Holy Crypt), the first construction of which lasted from the time of Alfonso II (VII century) until 1777 A.D. when it was destroyed in a fire. Finally, we have to see the Lakes, located in the Covadonaga National Park, previously called National Park of the Picos de Europa, this being the first national park to be created in Spain.
