- Other important things to know... __________________________________
-
Lab coats and safety glasses are compulsory in the laboratory. Students may bring them or borrow those available in the lab.
-
Students are given a bag, paper, notebooks, pencils, etc., everything they need in the lab, except the calculator machine. A locker is also provided near the lab.
-
Besides the main library, the books (in English) related to the experiments are readily available in a room close to the lab.
-
The computer room in the Department opens Mon-Fri 9-17. A computer room with 24 computers and 2 laser printers will be also installed in the residence hall, accessible to ISCChE students 24 hours a day.
-
Be aware that the electrical current in Spain (220 V and 50 Hz) is different from that in the US. The plugs are also different, but you can easily find converters (i.e., in a US airport, or in shops here). Current converters are usually available for small appliances too.
-
Students may send (by mail/courier) packages with clothes/other items to the Department address (see above), including their name and in care of Susana Luque. Please, be aware that those packages sent from outside EU will have to pay VAT (16 % tax) over the declared value, plus a handling fee. Once in Spain all the packages have to pay a toll fee, in an amount depending on the value of the content. There is a possiblity of an exemption of such fee, but we need to document it with:
(i) Letter from you explaning that you are sending your personal belongings by courier.
(ii) A letter from us indicating you are coming to the course for a period of time.
(iii) They might ask for a copy of the air ticket.
If you prefer to send it by USPS, surface mail, the procedure will be the same.
Please, consult with Susana before sending your packages, to take care of the claim of exemption. -
Credit cards are accepted almost everywhere. Most ATM's are good for getting money with a card issued in the US.
-
Traveler's checks, though safe, are much more expensive.
-
There are two banks very close to the University building.
Breakfast will be provided daily in the residence hall, while luch will be provided in the in a nearby restaurant from Sunday to Friday.
Requests for special meals (e.g., vegetarian) should be noted on the registration form.
On the first day of the course there will be an orientation session.
