Coordinating Beneficiary

UNIOVI is a public Higher Education and Research Institution located in Asturias (Spain). With around 18,000 undergraduate and 8,000 postgraduate students, and 2,000 research staff in over 30 faculties and engineering schools in three campuses it is the main Research Centre in the region.

In 2009, the Universidad de Oviedo was recognized by the Spanish Education Ministry as Campus of International Excellence. Within this framework, the University has created two Clusters, representing its commitment to specialization in Biomedicine and Health and Energy, Environment and Climate Change. The Clusters act as a meeting point with companies from these industry sectors to implement international projects. The Universidad de Oviedo is experienced in participating in EC projects.

Founded in 1988, Escorias y Derivados belongs to the group Cementos Tudela Veguin, the first company in Spain to manufacture artificial Portland Cement. The company has two manufacturing plants, one situated in Veriña and the other one in Somonte.

During his almost thirty years of existence, in order to satisfy new needs wich have arisen in the field of construction materials and also to comply with environmental policies, Escorias y Derivados has gone to introduce new materials, slags from blast furnace in the production of cements and derived products such as concretes and mortars, It is highlighting that the aforementioned materials uses to end up in rubbish tips.

Air cooled and granulated slags from blast furnace, have grow in value with this new use and not only on the construction word, but also in the manufacture of glass and in agricultural fields , and further new uses of slags are continuously being investigated.

EDP is a global energy leader and one of the main operators on the Iberian Peninsula. The EDP Group is present in Spain in the production, generation, transmission and marketing of electricity, gas and services. Since 2002, the year in which it acquired a majority stake of Hidrocantábrico, EDP has had an important business portfolio in Spain.

As result of the operation of its coal power plants, EDP produces important amounts of fly ash and gypsum as side products, and therefore, is very interested in their valorisation and reutilisation. For this reason, EDP has been involved in R&D projects aiming at finding new applications for these materials, including their utilisation for soil remediation. An EDP’s previous research project has shown that these materials can be employed in soils polluted with heavy metals for avoiding the lixiviation of the heavy metals into the ground water. This Life proposal continues the research line opened with that project, and will serve to validate the previous results at a demonstration scale.

GSERVICE took part into several project works, many of them linked to facilities with presence of dangerous pollutants; some of these kind of works are:

  • Decommissioning of steel industries contaminated facilities. Characterization, classification and waste management.
  • Decommissioning of contaminated facilities from thermal power plants. Characterization, classification and waste management.
  • Contaminated soils movements. Transporting to own facilities for treatment management.
  • Collection and transportation of municipal and hazardous leachate from landfills. Transfer to treatment plant.
  • Earthworks, including hazardous waste in railway works.
  • Earthworks for mining waste dumps restoration.
  • Making sanitation networks and storage ponds industrial waste oils.

The Law of the Principality of Asturias 4/2004, of 30 November, of the Asturian Institute of Occupational Risks regulates the organization and operation of this independent body which aims to manage policies on health, safety, environment and health work of the Principality of Asturia. Among the functions assigned to that Law the Asturian Institute of Prevention (IAPRL) “encouraging, supporting and promoting activities by employers, workers and their representative organizations, in order to improve the safety and health at work has , reducing occupational hazards and research and operation of new forms of protection, promoting the implementation of effective prevention structures. To this end, the Asturian Institute of Occupational Risks may sign cooperation agreements with public and private entities, as well as with the different agents sociale “.

Recuperación y Renovación S.L. (R&R)

Recuperacion y Renovacion begins its activity in the field of engineering; its work is mainly linked to industrial and mining activity and focused on the environmental sector.

Some of its partners came from the company “TECMIM” that was dedicated to environmental engineering since 1997. Thus, R&R decided to expand its activity to research in waste recovery from mining activities and steel processes. For the development of its research activity in waste recovery, the company is currently adapting a specific area of 600 m2. For the development of its activity Recuperación y Renovación has a staff of 10 people, of which 9 are technical and administrative staff. Since November, 2019, Recuperación and Renovación has the EMAS certification.
