 | Location
In Oviedo,
a town of medieval origin located in the midst of a breathtaking landscape of
valleys and mountains not far from the coast; Oviedo offers visitors the tranquility
and safety characteristic of small cities (under 200,000 inhabitants) in Northern
Spain. It is the capital of the Principality of Asturias and the main site of
the University. Furthermore, it is the geographical, political, administrative,
cultural and service centre of the region. 28 kilometres away (access by road,
motorway and rail) is Gijón, a city
founded more than 2000 years ago by the Romans. Several traces of its origins
can still be seen today in its recently refurbished historic centre; Gijón
is also a University center and the capital of summer tourism in thel Principality
of Asturias. It has three large beaches in the very heart of the urban centre
and in the summer months is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in
the North of Spain. The liveliness of the numerous popular festivities (Semana
Negra or Thriller Novel Week, “romerías”, bullfighting, sporting
competitions, gastronomic festivals, etc.) combines with a varied cultural activity
spread out over its streets and squares (exhibitions, theatre performances, musical
concerts, etc.). |
