José Barluenga was born in 1940 in Tardienta (Spain), a small village in the north of Spain, close to the Pyreness. He is married to María Cruz Badiola and is the father of five daughters (Sofía, Ana, Marta, María Cruz, and Mayte) and one son (Gonzalo).
He studied chemistry at the University of Zaragoza and completed his Ph. D. with Professor Gómez-Aranda in 1966. After that, he spent three and a half years at the Max Planck Institut für Kohlenforschung in Mülheim under the direction of Professor Heinz Hoberg working in organometallic chemistry. In 1970 he came back to Spain and was appointed Research Associate at the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) at Zaragoza and in 1972 he moved to the University of Zaragoza as Associate Professor where he stayed until 1975, when he got the chair of organic chemistry at the University of Oviedo, where he is currently developing his research. Along this time he has been the President of the Chemical Advise Committee for Scientific and Technological Research and of the First Spanish Evaluation Committee for Research in Chemistry, both from the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science (CAICYT/MEC). From 1997 he is also the President of the Organic Division of the Real Sociedad Española de Química. He was the promoter of the foundation of the Instituto Universitario de Química Organometálica "Enrique Moles" in 1993, where he is the Director.
Professor Barluenga has published more than 540 research papers and has been the advisor of more than 95 Ph.D. Thesis.
