Ongoing projects

ECOLOGY AND EVOLUTION OF ACOUSTIC MIMICRY IN BIRDS
Funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (2009-2011)
The project addresses to interspecific vocal mimicry, i.e. the resemblance of one or more vocalizations of an individual of one species to the acoustic signals typical of another species. This kind of mimicry is very common among bird species worldwide but is still poorly studied, in spite having puzzled biologists for more than a century. This project focuses on imitation mechanisms, functions and evolution.

IMPACT AND INTERACTION OF CLIMATE ON THE BEHAVIOUR, ECOLOGY AND DISTRIBUTION OF UPLAND BIRDS OF THE PICOS DE EUROPA NATIONAL PARK
Funded by Fundacion Biodiversidad (2008-2010)
The Cantabrian mountains are likely to be severely impacted by climate change because of their southern location and the limited range of altitudes they cover. Changes occurring here may provide an early glimpse of what may come to pass in lowland environments, and help us understanding global warming trends. We study the impact and interaction of climate with the behaviour (movements, flushing distance), physiology (immune condition, physiological stress), and abundance patterns of the passerines that inhabit these mountain tops.

ALTITUDINAL GRADIENTS OF DIVERSITY IN THE PICOS DE EUROPA NATIONAL PARK
Funded by Fundacion Biodiversidad (2010-2011)
We address the elevational gradient of bird diversity in the Picos de Europa National Park, and analyze the climatic, biogeographic, environmental an ecological factors that maintain the diversity of birds in this mountainous area, characterized by impressive vertical gradients at a very small spatial scale. The ultimate goal is to develop accurate scenarios of climate change.

ADAPTATIONS OF THE MOUNTAIN AVIFAUNA TO ALTITUDE AND VULNERABILITY TO CLIMATIC VARIATION
Funded by FICYT (2009-2010)
We study the avifauna dwelling in Cantabrian Mountains in a 2000m altitudinal range, to highlight shifts associated with altitudinal variation in sexual signaling (visual ornaments and birdsong), territorial behavior during breeding, philopatry, physiological and behavioral indices of individual stress, and morphometry. The choughs (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax and P. graculus), the wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe) and the water pipit (Anthus spinoletta) are our main study models.
