Solidification and Solid-State Transformations of Metals and Alloys  (2017) José Antonio Pero-Sanz, María José Quintana, Luis Felipe Verdeja

Solidification and Solid-State Transformations of Metals and Alloys - 1st Edition - ISBN: 9780128126073

Disponible en formato electrónico

Description:

Solidification and Solid-State Transformations of Metals and Alloys describes solidification and the industrial problems presented when manufacturing structural parts by casting, or semi-products for forging, in order to obtain large, flat or specifically shaped parts. Solidification follows the nucleation and growth model, which will also be applied in solid-state transformations, such as those taking place because of changes in solubility and allotropy or changes produced by recrystallization. It also explains the heat treatments that, through controlled heating, holding and cooling, allow the metals to have specific structures and properties. It also describes the correct interpretation of phase diagrams so the reader can comprehend the behaviour of iron, aluminium, copper, lead, tin, nickel, titanium, etc. and the alloys between them or with other metallic or metalloid elements.

This book can be used by graduate and undergraduate students, as well as physicists, chemists and engineers who wish to study the subject of Metallic Materials and Physical Metallurgy, specifically industrial applications where casting of metals and alloys, as well as heat treatments are relevant to the quality assurance of manufacturing processes. It will be especially useful for readers with little to no knowledge on the subject, and who are looking for a book that addresses the fundamentals of manufacturing, treatment and properties of metals and alloys.

Transformations in the Mn-O-Si system using concentrated solar energy.

Daniel Fernández-González, Janusz Prazuch, Íñigo Ruiz-Bustinza, Carmen González-Gasca, Juan Piñuela-Noval y Luis Felipe Verdeja González

Resumen:

Energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions are a problem in the metallurgical industries. The synthesis of manganese and silicomanganese using concentrated solar energy is proposed in this paper. Mixtures of oxide of manganese (IV) and silicon (50 wt. % and 75 wt. %) were treated in a 1.5 kW solar furnace located in Odeillo. Results demonstrated that mixtures of manganese and silicon, but also silicomanganese, are obtained after treatment even in the less favorable situation: without iron, which reduces the liquidus temperature, and without slag-forming reagents.

Transformations in the Si-O-Ca system: Silicon-calcium via solar energy.

Daniel Fernández-González, Janusz Prazuch, Íñigo Ruiz-Bustinza, Carmen González-Gasca, Juan Piñuela-Noval y Luis Felipe Verdeja González

Resumen:

The production of silicon-calcium alloy is energy intensive (>10000 kWh/t). This means that energy cost has a relevant influence in the price of the alloy. The utilization of concentrated solar energy in the synthesis of silicon-calcium alloy is proposed in this paper. Metallurgical quality silicon and limestone are used as starting materials (25 wt. %, 50 wt. % and 75 wt. % Si). After 12 min treatment under power values of 1 kW and without using special atmosphere, silicon-calcium was detected in all samples, although mixed with the products of reaction (Ca3Si2O7, Ca10O25Si6, SiO2). This last question means that there was not proper separation metal-slag, and it should be improved in future investigations. However, the basic knowledge presented in this paper could be of great interest for an industrial process based on the solar energy. This way, the energy costs could be reduced, the pollutant emissions could be minimized, and the competitiveness of the ferroalloys industry could be increased.

The treatment of Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) slag with concentrated solar
energy
.

Daniel Fernández-González, Janusz Prazuch, Íñigo Ruiz-Bustinza, Carmen González-Gasca, Juan Piñuela-Noval y Luis Felipe Verdeja González

Resumen:

Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) slag is one of the sub-products generated in the steelmaking process. This waste is characterized by its free lime and free magnesia contents that limit its application in construction. Moreover, the iron content in BOF slag of 14–30 wt% is a quantity which is problematic in the manufacture of cements. On the other hand, BOF slag is a source of available iron in the steelmaking industry. Concentrated solar energy offers a great potential in high temperature applications, so we used it to treat BOF slag. In this way, the slag was treated to stabilize it combining the free lime and free magnesia to give other phases (silicates, aluminates, and complex oxides), but also to transform iron into a magnetic phase that could be recovered through magnetic methods. The results demonstrate that the free lime and free magnesia reacted with silicates, aluminates, and ferrites to form stable phases which are not hydrated in the presence of water. Due to this, the treated BOF slag might find application in the construction industry. Furthermore, the iron was transformed into magnetite/maghemite, i.e. phases with magnetic properties.

Iron Metallurgy via Concentrated Solar Energy.

Daniel Fernández-González, Janusz Prazuch, Íñigo Ruiz-Bustinza, Carmen González-Gasca, Juan Piñuela-Noval y Luis Felipe Verdeja González

Resumen:

Environmental protection is deeply rooted in current societies. In this context, searching for new environmentally friendly energy sources is one of the objectives of industrial policies in general, and of the metallurgical industries in particular. One of these energy sources is solar energy, which offers a great potential in high temperature applications, such as those required in metallurgy processes, when properly concentrated. In this paper, we propose the utilization of concentrated solar energy in ironmaking. We have studied the utilization of concentrated solar thermal in the agglomeration of iron ore mixtures and in the obtaining of iron via reduction with carbon (and coke breeze). The results from the experiments show the typical phases of the iron ore sinters and the presence of iron through smelting reduction.

Solar Synthesis of Calcium Aluminates.

D. Fernández-Gonzáleza, J. Prazuchb, I. Ruiz-Bustinza, C. González-Gasca, J. Piñuela-Noval y L. F. Verdeja

Resumen:

The production of high alumina refractory cements (> 75% Al2O3) is traditionally carried out in furnaces heated with both electric power (submerged arc furnaces) and fossil fuels (coke, natural gas). This heating system has several disadvantages: electricity price, contamination of the cement or greenhouse gases emissions. Solar energy, when properly concentrated, offers a great potential in high temperature applications, as those required in the manufacture of refractory and ceramic materials. In this paper we propose the synthesis of calcium aluminate compounds using concentrated solar energy. The results obtained prove the feasibility of the solar obtaining of the calcium aluminate compounds and could be useful for future development of this solar process in a larger scale.

Iron Ore Agglomeration Technologies

Daniel Fernández-González, Juan Piñuela-Noval y Luis Felipe Verdeja

Resumen:

Until the 1950s of the last century, the oxidized iron ores that were loaded into the blast furnace had granulometries within 10 and 120 mm. However, the depletion of high-grade iron ore sources has made necessary the utilization of concentration processes with the purpose of enriching the iron ore. Because of these processes, a fine granulometry is produced, and thus iron agglomeration process is necessary. There are several agglomeration processes including: briquetting, extrusion, nodulization, pelletizing and sintering, although pelletizing and sintering are the most widely used, and especially sintering process (70% blast furnace load). Apart from obtaining an agglomerated product, the objective is reaching the suitable characteristics (thermal, mechanical, physical, and chemical) in a product that is then fed into the blast furnace, achieving a homogenousand stable operation in this furnace with economical profitability.

Anodic Lodes and Scrapings as a Source of Electrolytic Manganese.

D. Fernández-González, J. Sancho-Gorostiaga, J. Piñuela-Noval y Luis Felipe Verdeja

Resumen:

Manganese is an element of interest in metallurgy, especially in ironmaking and steel making, but also in copper and aluminum industries. The depletion of manganese high grade sources and the environmental awareness have led to search for new manganese sources, such as wastes/by-products of other metallurgies. In this way, we propose the recovery of manganese from anodic lodes and scrapings of the zinc electrolysis process because of their high Mn content (>30%). The proposed process is based on a mixed leaching: a lixiviation-neutralization at low temperature (50 °C, reached due to the exothermic reactions involved in the process) and a lixiviation with sulfuric acid at high temperature (150–200 °C, in heated reactor). The obtained solution after the combined process is mainly composed by manganese sulphate. This solution is then neutralized with CaO (or manganese carbonate) as a first purification stage, removing H2SO4 and those impurities that are easily removable by controlling pH. Then, the purification of nobler elements than manganese is performed by their precipitation as sulphides. The purified solution is sent to electrolysis where electrolytic manganese is obtained (99.9% Mn). The versatility of the proposed process allows for obtaining electrolytic manganese, oxide of manganese (IV), oxide of manganese (II), or manganese sulphate.
