From AGRICOMPET we present a summary of Deliverable 2.3 – Comparative effectiveness of the different control systems extant in the Mediterranean countries for GIs.
This report examines the diversity and effectiveness of Geographical Indication (GI) control and governance systems in the Mediterranean region, based on a survey of 148 wine GIs across Spain, France, Italy, and Greece. The findings highlight critical institutional, governance, and performance factors affecting GIs today.
Strong control mechanisms and high-quality governance are crucial for the long-term success of GIs. Building organizational capacity, improving transparency, and securing sustainable funding are key priorities to enhance the credibility, economic impact, and resilience of GIs in the Mediterranean agri- food sector.
