Líneas de investigación

My PhD project focuses on the study of the functional and trade-off conflicts involved in regenerating processes, analyzing the benefits and consequences of the caudal autotomy and the tail regeneration in lacertids.

Life histories are usually determined by decisions about energy allocation, and the phenology of certain events. Some traits are developed simultaneously, which implies a conflict in energy allocation or trade-off. Although autotomy provides benefits such as escape from predators, it implies some costs: a useful appendage for locomotion is lost, and its regeneration implies an energetic outlay and trade-off.

During this PhD, I will study the functional costs of autotomy (locomotor performance and termorregulation behaviour), and the consequences of regeneration on reproduction and somatic growth.

These studies will contribute to a better understanding of the evolution of autotomy and regeneration, delving into the underlying mechanisms of its costs and benefits, as well as the reasons why it has evolved and has been maintained in some species and not in others.
