La asignatura proporciona una visi\u00f3n detallada de diferentes familias de compuestos bioactivos presentes en plantas, animales y microorganismos, y su importancia como moduladores en la prevenci\u00f3n de diferentes procesos implicados en el desarrollo de patolog\u00edas de car\u00e1cter inflamatorio o de procesos neopl\u00e1sicos, como enfermedad cardiovascular, c\u00e1nceres del tracto gastrointestinal, tumores hormono-dependientes, etc. Entre los compuestos nutrac\u00e9uticos de inter\u00e9s en biomedicina que se estudiar\u00e1n en detalle figuran los polifenoles (que incluyen familias como los flavonoides), los terpenoides (que incluyen familias como los carotenoides), los compuestos organosulfurados (que incluyen familias como los glucosinolatos), y los prebi\u00f3ticos de tipo polisacar\u00eddico. Compuestos de todos estos grupos se han usado durante los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os en modelos animales para diferentes patolog\u00edas, incluyendo diversos tipos de tumores, y en algunos casos, en ensayos cl\u00ednicos en humanos. Se mostrar\u00e1n ejemplos de estas bioactividades in vivo, as\u00ed como otros in vitro sobre l\u00edneas celulares humanas. Adem\u00e1s, se describir\u00e1n las rutas de se\u00f1alizaci\u00f3n celular implicadas en la actividad antitumoral de los nutrac\u00e9uticos y se analizar\u00e1n los mecanismos de biodisponibilidad de estos compuestos bioactivos.
