Puente y Pablo Men\u00e9ndez demostrar que algunas leucemias infantiles se originan durante el desarrollo embrionario.<\/span><\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1\"><p>Este hallazgo, publicado en la revista Leukemia, fue liderado por Puente, del Instituto Universitario de Oncolog\u00eda de la Universidad de Oviedo (IUOPA), junto con Tal\u00eda Velasco y Pablo Men\u00e9ndez, del Instituto de Investigaci\u00f3n contra la Leucemia Josep Carreras y la Universidad de Barcelona. Adem\u00e1s, contaron con la colaboraci\u00f3n de investigadores de otras cuatro instituciones: el Hospital Infantil Universitario Ni\u00f1o Jes\u00fas, en Madrid; el Hospital Universitario Central de Asturias, en Oviedo; el Instituto de Biomedicina y Biotecnolog\u00eda de Cantabria (IBBTEC), en Santander, y el Instituto de Investigaci\u00f3n Sanitaria La Princesa, en Madrid.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep\" style=\"align-self: center;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;margin-top:20px;width:100%;\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-video fusion-youtube\" style=\"max-width:600px;max-height:360px;align-self:center; width:100%\"><div class=\"video-shortcode\"><lite-youtube videoid=\"hyKUMfpR980\" params=\"wmode=transparent&autoplay=1\" title=\"YouTube video player 1\"><\/lite-youtube><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep\" style=\"align-self: center;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;margin-top:20px;width:100%;\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\"><p>La leucemia mieloide aguda (LMA) es el tipo de c\u00e1ncer m\u00e1s frecuente en la infancia y puede diagnosticarse con pocos meses de vida. Se inicia en la m\u00e9dula \u00f3sea, donde se producen las c\u00e9lulas sangu\u00edneas, y puede propagarse r\u00e1pidamente a la sangre y a otras partes del cuerpo, incluidos los ganglios linf\u00e1ticos, el h\u00edgado, el bazo, el cerebro, la m\u00e9dula espinal y los test\u00edculos.<\/p>\n<p>La temprana aparici\u00f3n de este c\u00e1ncer hac\u00eda sospechar a los investigadores que el tumor pod\u00eda originarse durante el desarrollo fetal. \u00abAunque la secuenciaci\u00f3n del ADN nos permite identificar las mutaciones que favorecen el desarrollo de este tipo de c\u00e1ncer, determinar cu\u00e1ndo se inicia sigue siendo un desaf\u00edo\u00bb, explica Puente.<\/p>\n<p>Uno de los principales obst\u00e1culos radica en la dificultad de obtener una muestra del beb\u00e9 durante el embarazo o del reci\u00e9n nacido en el momento del parto. Sin embargo, esto cambi\u00f3 cuando los padres de un beb\u00e9 de cinco meses diagnosticado con leucemia aguda en el Hospital Ni\u00f1o Jes\u00fas de Madrid decidieron donar la sangre del cord\u00f3n umbilical a la investigaci\u00f3n. \u00abEsta muestra fue crucial para poder realizar un estudio que hasta ahora hab\u00eda sido imposible en las leucemias mieloides agudas\u00bb, comenta Men\u00e9ndez.<\/p>\n<p>A diferencia de los miles de mutaciones encontradas en el genoma de los tumores en adultos afectados por leucemia aguda, en la leucemia infantil los investigadores solo encontraron dos. \u00abUna de ellas ya estaba presente antes del nacimiento, lo que demuestra que, en algunos casos de leucemia mieloide aguda, el tumor se inicia durante el desarrollo fetal\u00bb, explica Puente.
