M\u00e1ximo Al\u00e1ez Corral<\/strong> is an Associate Lecturer in the English Department, University of Oviedo. His research is mostly concerned with the interactions between Contemporary Literature in English (focused on British, Irish and North-American short-storytelling and poetry), Contemporary Visual Art (especially photography and performance art), and Feminist Studies, with an emphasis on body theory and the Medical Humanities. His publications include two monographs: on the representation of the female body in contemporary women artists (Cuerpos reales\/Cuerpos figurados<\/em>, 2011), and on the representation of violence against women in the works of Ana Mendieta, Cindy Sherman and Nan Goldin (De la mirada masculina a la acci\u00f3n cr\u00edtica<\/em>, 2018). He has also published articles and essays on the male gaze, nudity, bodily pain, illness and aggressions on the female body as illustrated in the short stories and poems of Nuala O\u2019Connor, Margaret Atwood, Alice Munro, and Alicia Suskin Ostriker, among others.<\/p>\n

Another of his fields of interest is literary translation of works in English into Spanish. He has translated Nuala N\u00ed Chonch\u00fair\u2019s Nude<\/em> (2009) (Desnudo<\/em>, 2017), and is currently working on translations of James Joyce\u2019s Dubliners<\/em> and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man<\/em>, as well as on his own selection and translation of short stories by Ramsey Campbell, Steve Rasnic Tem, and Nuala O\u2019Connor.<\/p>\n

However, M\u00e1ximo\u2019s principal passion remains artistic practice\u2014in particular, painting and drawing\u2014which he has been devoting his time to ever since he finished his Fine Arts studies (University of Seville, 2001). He has had several exhibitions of his works over the past twenty years both in Spain and internationally.<\/p>\n

Currently, he is a member of the research project \u201cEND: Illness in the Age of Extinction. Anglophone Narratives of Personal and Planetary Degradation (2000-2020)\u201d, financed by the Spanish National Research programme.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/4″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n
