In this new 2026 campaign, our research team is deploying cutting-edge technology in Canarian waters to monitor this species\u2014whose extreme fragility prevents the use of direct on-body sensors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"PHYSALIA 2026: Tracking the Portuguese Man O&#039; War in the Canary Islands\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zi80SvzsQzE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key Actions of the 2026 Campaign<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Drone Monitoring:<\/strong> We are performing high-resolution tracking to determine navigation trajectories, recording position, sail orientation, and colony behavior.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Oceanographic Sensors:<\/strong> We utilize specialized buoys equipped with wind and current sensors to analyze the physical mechanics driving their movement across the ocean.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Statistical Rigor:<\/strong> Moving beyond historical studies (some dating back 70 years which only analyzed two specimens), our team monitors <strong>11 specimens per outing<\/strong>, ensuring the statistical replicability of our observations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Predictive Modeling:<\/strong> The data collected will feed Agent-Based Models (ABM) in a &#8220;virtual ocean,&#8221; combining biological variables with wind and current data to simulate population dynamics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>&#8220;The tracking we are performing in this campaign is vital for understanding how they move and at what speeds. This will allow us to develop prediction models to foresee when and exactly where they will reach our coastlines.&#8221;<\/em> \u2014 <strong>May G\u00f3mez<\/strong>, Lead Researcher.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Interdisciplinary Science for Coastal Safety<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This joint effort by oceanographers, evolutionary ecologists, engineers, and modelers aims to shed light on a little-known species while providing scientific tools to improve beach safety and the management of our marine biodiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Project Details<\/strong> The &#8220;Evolution of Biological Sailing Navigation&#8221; project (<strong>PHYSALIA<\/strong>) is funded by the State Research Agency (Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities) and will run until August 2027.
