Somos IUOPA

At the University Institute of Oncology of the Principality of Asturias (IUOPA) we firmly believe that research and scientific dissemination must go together, inspiring new generations and making discoveries accessible to society. For this reason, it is a pleasure to present this new space, “Somos IUOPA” (“We are IUOPA”), where we can share our progress in the fight against cancer, the result of the research we carry out in Asturias.

In this first publication, we want to introduce you to the Institute, born in 2000 thanks to the support of Obra Social Cajastur and made up of a wide variety of research groups, with more than 200 scientists. These groups closely collaborate to address the challenges of cancer research with even more drive and thus move towards a more hopeful future in the fight against this pathology.

The goal is clear: to carry out high-quality science and strengthen the connection between basic and clinical research in oncology. That is, not only to better understand cancer but also to ensure that these advances have a real impact on our health. We aim to translate this new knowledge into practical applications for the diagnosis and treatment of the disease, taking advantage of the fact that IUOPA professionals are part of both the University of Oviedo, the Central Hospital of Asturias (HUCA) and other health centres.

In the next updates, we will take a tour of the different research groups that make up the IUOPA. Each laboratory will explain to us which tumour mechanisms their research focuses on, what advances they have made and the challenges they face. It will be our pleasure if you join us on this exciting journey through the world of oncological research, and discover how we are working to fight cancer and improve the lives of people affected by this disease from Asturias.
