R&D Facilities

Battery and new energy storage systems research group - I+D Facilities:

The research group has different facilities located in the Campus of Gijón- University of Oviedo related with the development of electronic instrumentation systems and, mainly, with battery testing and cell electrochemical characterization.

This laboratory (about 70 m2) is located in the building of the “Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department”. It has four automated test-benches with temperature control in each of them. The most relevant infrastructures for this laboratory are:

  • 1 commercial test-bench with 4 output channels for small capacity batteries (ARBIN Instruments)
  • 3 Customizable test-benches for medium/large capacity batteries:
DC power supplies of 13 kW (580A; 60V maximum values) and DC electronic loads of 1,8 kW (300 A)
  • 2 Programmable thermal chambers (0 ºC to +60 ºC)
  • 1 Programmable thermal room (2.45 m x 2 m x 2.4 5m) for testing at room temperature from -20 ºC to +60 ºC, with gas evacuation system

Additionally, this laboratory is equipped with specific hardware for battery monitoring (measurement equipment, sensors and electronic devices and so on) and with tools for the design and development of electronic instrumentation systems.

This laboratory (about 110 m2) is located in the building of “Scientific and Technical Services”. It has a commercial battery test-bench for medium/large capacity batteries with a thermal chamber to temperature control. This building also houses various electric vehicles equipped with portable monitoring systems, used for field battery testing. The characteristics of the most significant infrastructures of this laboratory are:

  • Test-Bench with maximum power of 60 kW (600 A; 100 V)
    12 output channels (50 A; 100 V each)
  • Programmable Thermal chamber (-10 ºC to 60 ºC)
  • Cold system for battery storage
  • Small Electric Vehicle, Electric Scooter, Electric Wheelchair. The group manage different charging stations for EVs at the Campus of Gijón:
5 charging points for electric bicycles and motorcycles, and 3 charging points for electric cars.
