Elena Lastra, born in Santander (Spain), studied at the University of Oviedo (Spain). In 1990 received her Ph.D. under the supervision of  Dr. José Gimeno and Dr. M. Pilar Gamasa, working with alkynes and vinylidene complexes of copper and iron. In 1990 obtained a Fulbright scholarship  for a two-years postdoctoral stay with Louis Hegedus at Colorado State University, working with chromium carbenes and the use of isotopically labelled compounds in organic synthesis. In 1993 she moved to the University of Oviedo (Spain) where she got a permanent position in 1996.

Her recent  research interest has been focused on:

•  Transition metal carbenes in organic synthesis 

•  Enantiopure transition metal complexes in asymmetric catalysis

•  Synthesis of water soluble organometallic complexes and their application in biphasic catalysis.

She is co-author of more than 30 papers, she has been director of one PhD Thesis and co-director of 4 PhD theses.

Awards:

• 1986: Premio Extraordinario de Licenciatura and Premio San Alberto Magno.

• 1990: Premio Extraordinario de Doctorado.
