I do research on the ecology of gelatinous zooplankton, winter ocean ecology with emphasis on the dynamics of phytoplankton blooms, and the function and conservation of coastal systems. Participated in cruises to the Bay of Biscay, the Arctic and Antarctica, and the circumglobal expedition MALASPINA.Referee for several scientific journals on marine ecology and oceanography and project evaluator for  the Spanish Ministry of Science and the NSF. Invited speaker for the American Society of limnology and Oceanography. Member of the Scientific Commitee of GLOBEC-Spain. PhD in the University of Oviedo, Spain. Postdoc in the Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada. Senior Lecturer in the Departamento de Biología de Organismos y Sistemas, University of Oviedo. I have supervised two PhD Thesis (Angel López-Urrutia and Nicolás Weidberg) anc currently supervise 3 PhD Thesis (Axayacatl Molina, Antonella Rivera and Sonia Romero) and several Master Thesis. I teach Evolutionary Ecology,  Biodiversity of Marine trophic webs and Marine protected areas, and have coordinated the  ERASMUS MUNDUS Master in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation in Oviedo from 2008 to 2014.
