The Project
The main goal will be to promote the industrial symbiosis between active and abandoned industries
The SUBproducts (Innovative circular economy concepts by reusing industrial subproducts and waste) project, with an implementation period of 4 years, is co-funded by the European Commission LIFE Programme with an amount of 882 176 €, the 60 % of the total budget of 1 470 296 €. SUBproducts4LIFE proposes to demonstrate innovative circular economy concepts by the reuse of industrial subproducts and waste for the remediation of contaminated soils and brownfield areas.
Objectives
There are 8 main objectives defined:
- Increasing the value chain of 4 sub-products.
- Promoting industrial symbiosis.
- Achieving a better soil management and land re-use.
- Reducing overall environmental impact of both industrial areas.
- Improve soil and water conditions.
- Proving the efficiency of alternative in-situ techniques.
- Promoting actively solutions and methodologies of circular economy.
- Develop an innovative dissemination and communication plan.
LA SOTERRAÑA
The main SUBProducts4LIFE site “La Soterraña” is an abandoned mine (mined by mountain mine methods, without vertical shaft) and industrial area in the North of Spain. Asturias is a region where in the present inventory of contaminated soils, 9 of the 12 listed contaminated soils are waste deposits with high arsenic and mercury content, and two other locations are industrial areas with high arsenic content.
El TERRONAL
The SUBProducts4LIFE site “El Terronal” is the secondary location of the project area; it is abandoned mercury mine located in Mieres council, owned by Asturbelga de Minas, SL, (stakeholder). They owned also former mining facilities and 8 mine deposits in the same area. A replication of pilot case 3 will be implemented in this area (case 3b). New techniques tested in La Soterraña will be validated in a pilot area of 200 m2.
