Expected Results

Four industrial subproducts valorised in Four degraded scenarios.
A 4×4 For the environmental improvement and circular economy development.

Direct expected results during project implementation:

  • 4 technical projects, including related health and safety assessment, Environmental Impact Assessment and Contingency plans (Actions A).
  • Increasing soil surface (action B1, B2): by recovering at least 25% of pilot areas currently sealed (5000 m2 in upper waste deposit and 2000 m2 in production area).
  • Reclamation of mining waste deposits (total reclaimed surface of 5000 m2, by the reuse of coal ash, gypsum and blast furnace slag (action B1); other results: decreasing contamination and improving stability conditions.
  • 9 filter and water treatment trenchs of 25 m length, 1.5 m width (Action A4 and B).
  • Improvement of water management: rainwater collection with a perimeter ditch, reducing 40-50% leachate water (Action B3).
  • Reduction arsenic and mercury contamination in soil and leachate water (at least 20%) in Pilot areas, being able to implement future filters sizes in at least 40-50 % for future actions (action B1, B2 and B3).
  • Recycling/reuse of 14530 t: approximately 12310 t of coal ash, 2070 t of gypsum from FGD (Flue Gas Desulfurization) and 150 t of steelmaking slag to be used in 3 pilot cases proposed in two mining areas (action B1, B2 and B3).
  • Re-use of metallurgic secondary resources or sub-products: 4000 t of blast furnace slag (action B1, B2, and B3).
  • 1 replicability and transferability plan (B3) and 4 circular economy concepts, by verifying at real scale conditions the “fixing capacity” of the 4 industrial subproducts (Action C3).
  • 4 LCA concepts defined of the 4 reused subproducts and waste (Action C4 and C5).
  • Phytoremediation of two 200-300 m2 parcels (action B1), plantation of at least 100 local tree species, 200 tree species, wildlife and domestic animal safety fence.
  • Further ddevelopment and implementation of Communication and dissemination plan. It is previewed to reach at least 10.000 persons (Action D). Awareness of at least 50 % of the inhabitants of pilot areas (approximately 12000 in Lena and 41000 inhabitants in Mieres): 22500 persons.

Expected results After-LIFE (year 4-10):

  • Reduction of environmental impact indicators (soil, water, biota) by reducing its quantitative assessment value at least 40 % and by changing its current qualitative value (high to extremely high) to an assumable low-medium impact (Actions B and C).
  • Secondary results: environmental reclamation of a lower waste deposit in La Soterraña (20000 m2) and of “El Terronal” (3600 m2) by applied results of the project.
