Experimental sites

Taliarte

Taliarte is located on the eastern coast of Gran Canaria, within the municipality of Telde, and stands out for its combination of fishing, marine, and scientific activity. The area is home to a marina that serves fishing, recreational, and scientific purposes, sheltered from northeasterly storms and well suited for maritime operations related to oceanographic research. It is also an ideal location for conducting drone-based monitoring of Portuguese man-of-war, and it lies close to the EOMAR facilities, offering convenient access for field operations and research activities.

Cabo de San Lorenzo

Located on the eastern cliffs of Gijón, Cabo de San Lorenzo offers wide visibility over the Cantabrian Sea, making it an excellent vantage point for drone-based monitoring of Portuguese man-of-war along the coastline.

Canal de Sahones

The Sahones Channel, a small marine channel located in the urban area of Gijón and adjacent to the Gijón Aquarium —with which we maintain a close collaboration— provides direct coastal access ideal for close‑range monitoring of Portuguese man-of-war.

The BIOPARC Aquarium of Gijón

The Bioparc Gijón Aquarium actively collaborates with the PHYSALIA project by providing access to its outdoor tanks and supplying live bait, enabling the temporary maintenance of collected Physalia physalis colonies. These specialized facilities allow researchers to extend specimen survival and conduct controlled experiments essential for advancing the study of their biology, navigation, and behavior, reinforcing the aquarium’s commitment to marine research and conservation.
