Nuria Planas, Full Professor in Mathematics Education at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain. In 2013 was awarded for ICREA Academia Professorship, Catalan Institution of Research and Advanced Studies, and for the period 2013-2016 she was awarded as Extraordinarious Professor by Department of Mathematics Education, College of Education, University of South Africa, Pretoria, and renewed for the years 2017-2020. She has been a member of the Committee of Education, European Mathematical Society (two consecutive terms, 2009-2016), of the Executive Committee of the Spanish Society for Research in Mathematics Education (2012-2015), of the Scientific Programme Committee of the XVII, XVIII and XIX Annual Symposia of the Spanish Society for Research in Mathematics Education (2013, 2014 & 2015), of the International Committee of the 21 ICMI Study, ‘Mathematics Education and Language Diversity’, of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (2008-2014), of the International Programme Committee of the 21 ICMI Study Conference, ‘Mathematics Education and Language Diversity’ (2010-2011), of the International Committee of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education (2010-2014), and Chair of the ‘Mathematics and Language’ TWG of the European Society for Research in Mathematics Education (since 2013).
Nuria’s research interests concern mostly sociocultural classroom research on language, and her most recent research deals with sociocultural and sociolinguistic aspects of mathematics teaching as deployed in PD settings. Her underlying stances on values and norms towards language responsiveness in mathematics content teaching are thus sociocultural.
