Este congreso invita a investigadores y académicos a explorar y debatir la evolución de la libertad de filosofar como un derecho fundamental que se ha ido esculpiendo a lo largo de los siglos. A través de esta convocatoria, buscamos comprender cómo la libertad de pensamiento y expresión, nacida en la confrontación con los límites impuestos por diversas confesiones religiosas, ha moldeado la trayectoria del pensamiento en España.
La reivindicación de la libertad para explorar y expresar ideas, defendida fervientemente por figuras como Giordano Bruno y Galileo Galilei en su deseo de interpretar la Biblia más allá de las restricciones del Magisterio católico, constituye un punto de partida crucial en nuestro debate. Asimismo, la figura de Baruch Spinoza se erige como un emblema de la lucha por la independencia de la filosofía respecto a las ataduras del poder político y la teología. Su trabajo simboliza un importante esfuerzo por desvincular la reflexión filosófica de las obligaciones y restricciones externas, marcando un hito en la historia del pensamiento filosófico. Estos casos iluminan el tenso entrelazado entre fe, conocimiento y poder que queremos explorar en nuestro congreso.
Nos proponemos analizar el contexto y los límites de la libertad de pensamiento en la época de Benito Feijoo, buscando comprender las dinámicas y desafíos específicos de este periodo. Nos interesan no solo las teorías y autores que abogan por la libertad de filosofar, sino también aquellos que plantean límites a esta libertad. El análisis de la censura y los procesos inquisitoriales será central en nuestras discusiones, sirviendo como un espejo del ámbito de acción y las restricciones de los filósofos en aquella época.
La libertad de filosofar afecta a temas tan variados como la medicina, la educación de las mujeres, el periodismo y divulgación de ideas, el estatuto de la Biblia y las ciencias o la libertad de conciencia, por poner algunos ejemplos. Invitamos a presentaciones que aborden estos temas desde una variedad de perspectivas y disciplinas, con el objetivo de fomentar un diálogo fructífero y multidimensional sobre la libertad de filosofar, su historia y su desarrollo en la época de Feijoo.
We invite researchers and academics to explore and debate the evolution of the freedom to philosophize as a fundamental right that has been sculpted over the centuries. Through this conference, we seek to understand how the freedom of thought and expression, born from confrontation with the limits imposed by various religious confessions, has shaped the trajectory of thought in Spain.
The claim for the freedom to explore and express ideas, fervently defended by figures such as Giordano Bruno and Galileo Galilei in their desire to interpret the Bible beyond the constraints of the Catholic Magisterium, constitutes a crucial starting point in our debate. Likewise, the figure of Baruch Spinoza stands as an emblem of the struggle for the independence of philosophy from the ties of political power and theology. His work symbolizes a significant effort to detach philosophical reflection from external obligations and restrictions, marking a milestone in the history of philosophical thought. These cases illuminate the tense interweaving between faith, knowledge, and power that we aim to explore in our congress.
We propose to analyze the context and limits of the freedom of thought during the era of Benito Feijoo, seeking to understand the dynamics and specific challenges of this period. We are interested not only in the theories and authors who advocate for the freedom to philosophize but also in those who propose limits to this freedom. The analysis of censorship and the inquisitorial processes will be central to our discussions, serving as a mirror of the scope of action and the restrictions faced by philosophers at that time.
The freedom to philosophize affects topics as varied as medicine, women’s education, journalism and dissemination of ideas, the status of the Bible and the sciences, or freedom of conscience, to name a few examples. We invite presentations that address these topics from a variety of perspectives and disciplines, with the goal of fostering a fruitful and multidimensional dialogue on the freedom to philosophize, its history, and its development in the era of Feijoo.
