Mafalda Costa is an Invited Auxiliary Researcher at HERCULES Laboratory (University of Évora) and a «La Caixa» Foundation Postdoctoral Junior Leader Fellow. She holds a joint-degree PhD in Archaeology and Earth and Space Sciences in the Ghent University (Belgium) and the University of Évora (Portugal), respectively. Mafalda’s knowledge in a wide range of analytical techniques – XRF, SEM-EDS, micro-Raman spectroscopy, XRD and LA-ICP-MS – has enabled the determination of composition, provenance and manufacturing technology of historical artifacts and painting materials. Her main area of research is the field of glass studies, having analyzed artifacts from the Iron Age, Roman and Early Modern periods. She is currently focused on determining the geochemical signatures of degraded archaeological glass and understanding their implications in provenance studies.
