Cristina Méndez has already printed her PhD Thesis entitled «Fundamental studies and evaluation of analytical potential of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy based on short and ultrashort pulses» (Estudios fundamentales y evaluación del potencial analítico en espectroscopía de plasmas inducidos por láser con pulsos cortos y ultracortos). The dissertation will take place on January 23rd at the Faculty of Sciences (11.30 am) in Oviedo. Final lap of this five year race!

The Spectroscopy, Lasers and Plasmas GELP research group offers a «FPI» PhD contract within project #PlasmaSpectra4H for the development of tandem methods of atomic spectroscopy The project is aimed at the analysis of hydrogen-related materiales using plasma-based techniques (Glow Discharge-OES / MS, LIBS, LA-ICP-MS), and includes tasks related to: Instrumental development Fundamental studies Analysis of real samples Profiles with Physics, Chemistry or Engineering backgrounds are welcome to apply, and experience in the following will be valued: Lab work, especially optical and/or mass spectrometry Softwares for designing (e.g. Autocad) Programming (e.g. Python) If you are interested, send an email to the…

GELP member Dr. Luis Javier Fernández-Menéndez will be participating as speaker in an event organized by PhotOvis, a student chapter from OPTICA , with a talk entitled «Espectroscopía de una tesis doctoral: ciencia y guía de supervivencia» (Spectroscopy of a PhD Thesis: science and survival guide) where he will talk about his experience as a PhD student both from the personal and the scientific point of view. The talk will take place in the Sala de Grados of the Faculty of Sciences (Oviedo) on Wednesday 27 Nov at 18:00. You can scan the QR code below to register and ensure…

We are happy to announce that Yinchenxi Zhang defended her Thesis last Wednesday, finally becoming Dr. Zhang!!
The Thesis Committee established a stimulating debate after the fantastic presentation delivered by Dr. Zhang, sharing useful insight and thought-provoking questions that were expertly addressed by the PhD candidate. We are very proud to congratulate Min on her outstanding achievement of a sobresaliente and wish her the best of luck in her new postdoc position in Shanghai. ¡¡Enhorabuena, Min!! Also, congratulations to Dr. Jaime Orejas and Prof. Jorge Pisonero for their superb work as supervisors!
GELP’s most international PhD student, Min, is approaching the end of her Thesis, entitled «Investigation of Matrix Effects in the Analytical Performance of Solution Cathode Glow Discharge Coupled to Optical Emission Spectroscopy» (Investigación de los Efectos de Matriz en el Rendimiento Analítico de la Descarga Luminiscente con Disolución como Cátodo Acoplado a Espectroscopía de Emisión Óptica). She will defend her work on November 13rd at the Faculty of Chemistry (11.30 am) in Oviedo, and we are sure she will pass with flying colors!! Congratulations Min, one last push!!! ¡Ánimo, Miiiiin!

GELP has taken part in this year’s European Researchers’ Night with a stand entitled Los colores de la luz (The colors of light). Families, children and all curious passersby chatted with us to learn more about the nature of light illustrated with simple experimental demonstrations including continuous and discreet emission sources, diffraction gratings and, of course, lasers! We also had the chance to participate in the morning session Ciencia sin diferencia (Science sans difference), organized by the Unidad de Cultura Científica y de la Innovación of University of Oviedo and aimed at students with special education needs. It was a…

GELP researchers in collaboration with former GELP member Dr. Álvarez-Llamas have been awarded a Spanish patent ES2958384 entitled Método para la identificación y determinación de halógenos en muestras liquidas mediante espectroscopia de ruptura inducida por laser asistida por nebulización (Method for the identification and determination of halogens in liquid samples through nebulization-assisted laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy). The patented methodology allows for the qualitative and quantitative study of halogens in liquid samples by means of nebulization of the liquid on an alkali-earth-containing solid substrate. The deposited liquid is ablated with a fraction of the solid target, and the presence of halogens is…
