GELP awarded with a prestigious La Caixa Health Project

GELP has been awarded with a Project from the prestigious ”la Caixa” Foundation Health Call. Within the Health Research Call, it is one of 34 biomedical research projects selected from more than 700 proposals submitted in this edition. This project funded with almost one million euros is based on a consortium of four groups:  Hospital del Mar Research Institute (Research group of Dr. Alex Calon); Universidad de Granda (Research group of Dr Daniele Lo Re;  Centro Nacional de Análisis Genómico (CNAG) (Research group of Dr. Holger Heyn); and Universidad de Oviedo (GELP Group).

Giulia Terlecki’s short-stay at GELP Group

Giulia has joined our research group for the weeks to work on LA-ICP-MS!! Giulia Terlecki is a PhD candidate in Biological Oceanography at the Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG, Brazil), where she investigates trophic and population structure of fish, with a focus on stock definition. She has previous experience with population structure using genetic approaches and is currently working to understand the ecology, ontogenetic movements and individual specialization of Prionace glauca and Isurus oxyrinchus through isotopic and microchemical analyses of vertebrae. This stage of the study is being developed in collaboration with the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and…

Dra. Mafalda Costa’s short-stay at GELP Group

Mafalda will join our research group for the next month of November 2025 to work on LIBS and LA-ICP-MS!! Mafalda Costa is an Invited Auxiliary Researcher at HERCULES Laboratory (University of Évora) and a «La Caixa» Foundation Postdoctoral Junior Leader Fellow. She holds a joint-degree PhD in Archaeology and Earth and Space Sciences in the Ghent University (Belgium) and the University of Évora (Portugal), respectively. Mafalda’s knowledge in a wide range of analytical techniques – XRF, SEM-EDS, micro-Raman spectroscopy, XRD and LA-ICP-MS – has enabled the determination of composition, provenance and manufacturing technology of historical artifacts and painting materials. Her…

Learning about the engineering challenges of materials in contact with high-pressure hydrogen!

GELP members have attended the I Encuentro Nacional de Materiales en Contacto con Hidrógeno, where academic and industry experts shared their research related to hydrogen embrittlement providing valuable insights on the state-of-the-art of this critical topic. GELP is working to demonstrate the potential of optical spectroscopy (LIBS) and mass spectrometry (GD-TOF) as techniques to characterize spatial distribution of hydrogen in materials of interest to provide complementary information to engineering studies. We hope fruitful colaborations will arise from this conference!! Congratulations to Borja Peral and Inés Fernández from SimuMecaMat for a fantastic event!!

Congratulations to Dr. Méndez-López!

We are delighted to share that Cristina Méndez has succesfully defended her Thesis and has earned the PhD title.  Dr. Méndez-López with her Thesis advisors and members of the Thesis Committee on January 23rd From left to right: Dr. Cristina González Gago (co-advisor), Prof. Marisa Fernández (committee, Universidad de Oviedo), Prof. José Miguel Vadillo (committee, Universidad de Málaga), Dr. Cristina Méndez, Prof. Alessandro De Giacomo (committee, Università degli Studi di Bari Aldo Moro), Dr. Maripaz Mateo (committee, Universidade da Coruña), Dr. Jaime Orejas (committee, Universidad de Oviedo) and Prof. Nerea Bordel (advisor). …

Another GELP Thesis ready to go!

Cristina Méndez has already printed her PhD Thesis entitled «Fundamental studies and evaluation of analytical potential of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy based on short and ultrashort pulses» (Estudios fundamentales y evaluación del potencial analítico en espectroscopía de plasmas inducidos por láser con pulsos cortos y ultracortos). The dissertation will take place on January 23rd at the Faculty of Sciences (11.30 am) in Oviedo. Final lap of this five year race!

GELP is looking for candidates to apply for a FPI contract!

The Spectroscopy, Lasers and Plasmas GELP research group offers a «FPI» PhD contract within project #PlasmaSpectra4H for the development of tandem methods of atomic spectroscopy The project is aimed at the analysis of hydrogen-related materiales using plasma-based techniques (Glow Discharge-OES / MS, LIBS, LA-ICP-MS), and includes tasks related to: Instrumental development Fundamental studies Analysis of real samples Profiles with Physics, Chemistry or Engineering backgrounds are welcome to apply, and experience in the following will be valued: Lab work, especially optical and/or mass spectrometry Softwares for designing (e.g. Autocad) Programming (e.g. Python) If you are interested, send an email to the…
