Collaboration paper featuring Ana Méndez and Jorge Pisonero published by Nature Communications!

Collaboration paper Long-term platinum-based drug accumulation in cancer-associated fibroblasts promotes colorectal cancer progression and resistance to therapy featuring Ana Méndez and Jorge Pisonero from the University of Oviedo was accepted by Nature Communications !  Abstract A substantial proportion of cancer patients do not benefit from platinum-based chemotherapy (CT) due to the emergence of drug resistance. Here, we apply elemental imaging to the mapping of CT biodistribution after therapy in residual colorectal cancer and achieve a comprehensive analysis of the genetic program induced by oxaliplatin-based CT in the tumor microenvironment. We show that oxaliplatin is largely retained by cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs)…

Luis Javier is one step closer to finishing his PhD!

GELP student Luis J. Fernández-Menéndez has already finished his Thesis manuscript entitled Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectrosocpy (LIBS) for halogen detection using molecular emission (Espectroscopía de plasmas inducidos por láser (LIBS) para la detección de halógenos empleando emisión molecular). His dissertation will take place at the Faculty of Sciences on March 3rd.  Congrats Luis! Final stretch!

Back from the European Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry!

The European Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry took place on January 30 – February 3 at Cankarjev dom in Ljubljana, Slovenia. GELP members Dr. Jaime Orejas and PhD Student Cristina Méndez attended the event with oral contributions. Pictures EWCPS2023, Tine Lisjak Dr. Jaime Orejas presented his Oral Talk entitled «Solution Cathode Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectrometry for high salinity samples: are organic additives beneficial?». His project is supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (PID2020-113951GB-I00). Cristina Méndez-López presented an Oral Talk entitled «Sensitive determination of halogens in liquid samples using nebulization-assisted LIBS». She also presented a poster entitled…

GELP students have participated in the PhD Multidisciplinary Chemical Congress

The first edition of PhD Multidisciplinary Chemical Congress, aimed to PhD students pursuing their work in Chemistry and related fields took place on January 19-20 at the Polytechnic School of Engineering of Gijón. Three of our students presented their works to their peers: Cristian Soto-Gancedo presented his poster entitled «Femtosecond Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry as a Powerful Multielemental Direct Solid Microanalysis Technique: Application to Gemstone Analysis». His project is supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (PID2020-113951GB-I00). Yinchenxi Zhang presented her poster entitled «Evaluation of Matrices Effect on Organic Additives Performance in Solution Cathode Glow…
