Paz González Menéndez has joined our research group for six months to work on LIBS-related projects!! This is her biography: «I graduated in Mathematics and Physics from the University of Oviedo. My bachelor’s thesis focused on laser-induced plasmas under different atmospheric conditions and the quantification of hydrogen in austenitic steels using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS). I am currently working as a laboratory technician in the GELP research group, contributing to the development of laser ablation–based instrumentation and methodologies for high-spatial-resolution, high-sensitivity multielemental spatial analysis.» Welcome to GELP!!
Cristina López Perandones has joined our research group for six months to work on SC-GD-OES-related projects!! This is her biography: «I am an undergraduate student in Physics and Mathematics at the University of Oviedo, currently working on my bachelor’s thesis, which focuses on the development of an artificial neural network for the analysis of heavy metals in optical emission spectroscopy using atmospheric-pressure glow discharges (SCGD). I recently joined the GELP research group, where I am focusing on the development of analytical techniques for the elemental monitoring of contaminants in water systems using SCGD.» Welcome to GELP!!
Adnan Parwez has joined our research group for the next year to work on LIBS-related projects!! Adnan Parwez completed his Bachelor’s degree in physics and a Master’s degree in Electronics in India. He then moved to Europe to pursue an Erasmus Mundus Master’s program in Microwave and Photonics Engineering, during which he studied in France, Italy, and Spain. As part of his Master’s thesis, he completed an industrial internship at ASENSE (formerly ASE Optics Europe) in Barcelona, where he worked on “tolerance analysis and optical performance evaluation of a high-precision optical system”. Dra. Méndez has presented an Invited lecture at the 13th Edition of the Euro-Mediterranean Symposium on Laser-induced Breakdown Spectroscopy, EMSLIBS 2025 (13th Euro-Mediterranean Symposium on Laser-induced Breakdown Spectroscopy – Sciencesconf.org) a conference dedicated to LIBS (Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy). Dr. Orejas has presented the lecture “Fundamental Insights on the Solution-Cathode Glow Discharge” at the Glow Discharge Spectroscopy session of the 2026 Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry, a conference dedicated to Plasma-based Atomic Optical and Mass Spectrometries. The conference held a session in honor of Prof. Ramon Barnes, founder and organizer of the conference since 1980, creating an amazing community and pushing forward great Science. Thanks Ramon!
GELP has been awarded with a Project from the prestigious ”la Caixa” Foundation Health Call. Within the Health Research Call, it is one of 34 biomedical research projects selected from more than 700 proposals submitted in this edition. This project funded with almost one million euros is based on a consortium of four groups: Hospital del Mar Research Institute (Research group of Dr. Alex Calon); Universidad de Granda (Research group of Dr Daniele Lo Re; Centro Nacional de Análisis Genómico (CNAG) (Research group of Dr. Holger Heyn); and Universidad de Oviedo (GELP Group).
