Sonia Otero Estévez has a degree in Social Work (2014), a master’s degree in Social Policies and Welfare (2015), and a PhD from the University of Oviedo (2021) with a doctoral thesis entitled “Obesity as a social problem: an analysis of dietary and physical activity practices in households with and without childhood obesity”. Her field of specialisation focuses on the analysis of social inequalities, social policies, food and health. She has participated in several reports and articles addressing the socio-economic and food situation of the most vulnerable population, such as “New and old forms of poverty in Spain: exploring food consumption during the crisis” published in the British Food Journal, or “Socio-economic evaluation of the Basic Social Wage in Asturias” published by the Department of Welfare and Social Services of the Principality of Asturias. She has also participated in several research projects, including “Alimentación y estructura social. Analysis of food inequalities in Spain” of the State R&D&I Programme “Retos de la Sociedad” funded by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and the project “Social and physiological frailty of people over 65 years old in the Principality of Asturias” belonging to the ELDER Consortium “The challenge of aging” of the Scientific Missions of the Principality of Asturias. She is currently a member of the Sociology of Food Research Group (UNIOVI), of the NISAL Network “Living standards, health, nutrition and inequality” and vice-president-treasurer of the Asturian Sociology Association.
