Having completed a first degree in Philosophy and Arts (1973) and his PhD in Sociology (1990), he is a Senior Technical Officer (on leave of absence) at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA). From 1978 to 1983 he worked as a Rural Sociologist at the National Institute of Agrarian Reform and Development, at the provincial headquarters in Huesca and from 1983 to 1991 as Head of Studies of the General Technical Secretariat of the MAPA. From 1992 to December 2014, he was a professor in the Department of Sociology II (Social Structure) of the Faculty of Political Science and Sociology at the National University of Distance Education (UNED). He has taught General Sociology, Human Ecology, Rural Sociology, and Environment and Society. Between 1983 and 1995 he was Director of the Revista Agricultura y Sociedad and of the book collections “Estudios” (“Studies”) and “Clásicos Agrarios” (“Agricultural Classsics”) for the MAPA. He retired on 30 December 2014. He has been a Member of the Council of the European Society of Rural Sociology. He is a member of the advisory board and editor for several academic journals in the fields of Rural Sociology, Food Sociology, Environmental Sociology, and History of Agricultural Policies and Social Thought.
